PN Tables No Confidence Motion Against Miriam Dalli Over Power Cuts

The Nationalist Party has tabled a motion of censure and no confidence in Energy Minister Miriam Dalli following recent nationwide power cuts, calling on the Prime Minister to seek her resignation or remove her from office.

The Nationalist Party said Opposition Leader Alex Borg and Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment Mark Anthony Sammut presented the motion in Parliament after weeks of electricity outages that left thousands of households and businesses without power during the summer.

According to the Nationalist Party, the power cuts followed a similar crisis in 2023, despite Government assurances that investment would strengthen the electricity distribution network.

The Opposition said the recurring outages had affected families, businesses, patients and vulnerable people.

The Nationalist Party also referred to the National Audit Office's report on electricity distribution planning and investment.

The PN said the report identified shortcomings in Enemalta's planning and concluded that insufficient investment in the distribution network was the main cause of the crisis.

The Opposition argued that the Government had failed to plan for rising electricity demand and population growth, and said Minister Dalli should assume political responsibility.

In response, the Labour Party said the Nationalist Party was seeking political gain rather than offering practical solutions.

The Labour Party said calls for the minister's resignation reflected a long-standing political tactic that did not help families or businesses affected by the outages.

The Labour Party said the Government was implementing the country's largest ever investment programme in the electricity distribution system under Minister Dalli's leadership.

It also said work on the second interconnector project was strengthening energy security and noted that the Government had secured a new energy supply agreement while maintaining stable electricity prices despite international inflation.

The Labour Party said its priority remained investing in infrastructure and supporting people affected by the recent disruptions.
