PN State Digging For Underground Mass Transit System Will Take 15 Months

As stated by PN, Traffic congestion has become a heavy burden on quality of life, affecting individuals, families, and every sector of the economy.
The Nationalist Party (PN) has proposed the development of a National Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) System, arguing that Malta requires a clear and structured vision rather than what it describes as a public relations or marketing exercise ahead of elections.
While the party acknowledges that this project alone will not resolve the traffic problem, it describes the MRT system as the “backbone” of a broader strategy aimed at significantly easing congestion across the country.
The proposed Mass Rapid Transport system would be primarily underground in several sections, in order to avoid placing additional pressure on already saturated localities.
PN also emphasised its historical role in delivering major national infrastructure projects, positioning this initiative as part of that tradition of large-scale national development. The project is also expected to be co-financed through European Union funds, supporting its long-term feasibility.
PN candidate and engineer Julian Borg outlined the technical vision behind the proposal, noting that the design is not yet final.
He described it as a structural backbone supported by key transport hubs connecting Tas-Sliema to the Airport, among other strategic corridors.
The implementation plan would begin with the establishment of a National MRT Unit within the first 100 days, followed by the preparation and submission of detailed plans after that period.
The first proposed line would span approximately 11.5 kilometres, featuring eight stations, and is expected to support a frequency of eight trips per hour, with trains operating at intervals of around seven minutes.
