Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg said Malta urgently needs a mass transport system, noting the 2030 Master Plan confirms buses take three times longer than private cars.

During an interview in Isla, the PN Leader outlined several proposals aimed at improving quality of life, including free access to a family doctor for elderly people and pensioners in acute cases. This voluntary scheme would ease pressure on primary care and hospitals while ensuring continuity of treatment.

Borg criticised the Government for stealth increases in Medicines Authority fees and pharmacy licences, saying these will push medicine prices higher and erode any income increases for older people.

On transport, he reiterated the PN’s long-standing call for a trackless tram or Bus Rapid Transit system with dedicated lanes, stressing that Malta cannot wait any longer for real solutions.

Borg also insisted that energy subsidies must remain, while Malta invests seriously in renewable energy to catch up with neighbouring countries.

Commenting on the Budget, he said it lacked measures to address daily concerns such as traffic, waiting lists, high living costs, environmental degradation, and out-of-stock medicines. He highlighted PN proposals including a Child Trust Fund, tax reductions, a four-day-week pilot and new green spaces.

Borg criticised the Government over the €900 million Steward hospitals deal, arguing that the money could have rebuilt and upgraded Malta’s hospitals. He also said the PN welcomes the announcement that White Rocks will become a National Park but wants proof that the Government will act, not merely make PR claims.

Borg argued that the Government’s Budget failed to address core issues such as traffic, waiting lists, medicine shortages, the cost of living and environmental decline. He said a PN Budget would have included initiatives like a Child Trust Fund, tax cuts, a four-day-week pilot, new green spaces and major transport investment.

Owen Teuma asked the PN Leader whether he will contest the 13th district in the next election. Alex Borg said that Gozo is his natural home and he cannot not contest that district. He added that he will also be contesting another district in Malta.
