PN Says Labour Government Left University Of Malta Drowning In €11 million Debt

The Nationalist Party claimed that the Labour Government has left University of Malta in a substantial amount of debt.
Following an article published by Times of Malta that stated that UM is currently in €11 million worth of debt, the Opposition is calling for the government to prove the institution with the necessary support.
PN stated that they did this when certain musical societies faced financial difficulty, explaining that just as it is important to safeguard Malta’s culture, “money spent on education is not an expense but an investment in the future of our children and our country.”
The Opposition raised concerns that in recent months, University of Malta has not been receiving adequate support from the government.
According to PN, UM has ended up in this situation primarily because, instead of continuing to invest in it, the Government cut the allocated budget while increasing lecturers’ salaries, which are paid from that same budget.
The Nationalist Party affirmed that Malta’s university should not be regarded as a commercial institution which generates profit, but as investment for youth to reach their full potential.
