The Nationalist Party has accused the Government of presenting a misleading picture of Malta's waste situation, arguing that important figures are being left out of public discussions.

In a statement by the Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment, Mark Anthony Sammut, and the Shadow Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Bernice Bonello, PN says the claim that Malta generated the least waste per person in the EU in 2024 failed to account for major categories, including construction and demolition waste.

In 2024, Malta reported generating 1,092 kilograms of waste per person, but in reality, this figure would have been significantly higher had mineral waste and construction debris been included in the figures.

PN says that Malta’s waste generation increased by over 17% that year, reaching a total of 3.5 million tonnes according to the National Statistics Office.

The PN also called on the Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Miriam Dalli, to present a clear strategy to reduce waste, improve recycling and tackle the country's reliance on landfills.
