PN React To Malta In Motion Plan: Transport Minister Responds

The Nationalist Party has criticised the Government’s latest transport plan, warning that Malta will remain stuck in traffic for years if Labour stays in power.
According to the party, the proposals announced will not deliver real change within a reasonable timeframe.
The statement argues that the Government’s approach relies too heavily on prolonged studies rather than immediate action. It claims that, so far, millions have been spent on consultancy work without tangible improvements to the country’s transport system.
“If Labour is re-elected, the party warns, the public faces another five years of congestion while further studies are carried out, potentially delaying actual construction for several more years.”
In contrast, the party outlined its own position, stating that under a Nationalist government led by Alex Borg, a clear implementation framework would be introduced within the first 100 days. It also pledged that the first mass transport line would be completed within one legislature.
Transport Minister Chris Bonett responded to the statement saying:
‘I have just read the statement issued by the Nationalist Party in reaction to the announcement of the integrated mass transport plan “Malta in Motion”. I must admit it was truly disappointing.’
‘On behalf of the Government, I extended my hand. I asked them once again to work together in the interest of the people, our children, and Malta.’
‘Yet by the evening they did not even allow the Government the basic courtesy of announcing the plan. Alex Borg released a video just as I began speaking. Aside from the lack of respect, despite the respect I have always shown the PN, he claimed in an agitated tone that he would deliver mass rapid transport, though it remains unclear what that entails.’
‘I believe strongly in this plan. This morning I received many messages of support that have strengthened my resolve. It will not be easy and challenges will arise, but I will not be discouraged.’
On its part, the Labour Party welcomed the Malta in Motion plan, describing it as a holistic strategy.
‘This is a plan that builds on, and further improves, what had been announced earlier’, the party said. It is a plan that has taken the time needed to be properly defined and is one that can be implemented.’
‘“Malta in Motion”, developed by Transport Malta together with the international firm Arup, brings together six main elements that will be integrated. These are bus services, sea transport, cars and roads, walking, cycling, and a Rapid Transit or Light Rail system.’
