PN Leader Alex Borg this morning proposed a measure which would give grandparents up to €2,000 a year for every child under the age of three they take care of while the parents are at work.

The proposal aims to support families facing the growing pressures of parenthood, while also tackling Malta’s low fertility rate. With many young couples delaying having children because of financial and lifestyle concerns, the measure could encourage more people to become parents by offering families extra support through grandparents.

It also recognises the huge role grandparents already play in Maltese society. Many older people remain active and involved in family life, and the proposal would reward that contribution while encouraging elderly people to stay socially engaged and active.

At the same time, the measure could help reduce pressure on childcare centres by giving families another supported childcare option at home.

Overall, the proposal focuses on strengthening family support systems, helping young parents, encouraging higher birth rates, and valuing the contribution of older generations.
