At a Qrib Tagħkom event in Żebbuġ, Partit Nazzjonalista leader Alex Borg outlined his party’s proposals for improving mental healthcare in Malta.

He said that mental health remains one of the country’s most pressing issues, with many people struggling to access adequate care.

The PN is proposing the construction of a new mental health hospital to replace outdated facilities and provide patients with modern, humane treatment.

Borg explained that existing services are overstretched and lack proper coordination, leaving many individuals without the help they need.

To address this, the PN is also proposing a network of community-based support services in every locality.

These services would provide professional assistance close to home, ensuring that anyone seeking help can find it without delay.

The proposal forms part of a wider social vision aimed at tackling loneliness, depression and isolation.

Borg noted that he has appointed a Shadow Minister for Solitude to focus specifically on this area, signalling the PN’s intent to prioritise mental wellbeing in policymaking.

During the same event, Professor Andrew Azzopardi highlighted the shortcomings at Mount Carmel Hospital and described the need for major reform.

He cited figures showing that half of Malta’s population experiences mental health problems during their lifetime and that more than 800 suicides were recorded in the past five years.
