PN Leader Alex Borg this morning unveiled a package of proposals aimed at improving the quality of life of elderly people and pensioners, with the main measure being a minimum yearly pension increase of €650 for all pensioners.

The proposals form part of the PN’s electoral manifesto ahead of the upcoming general election on 30th May, with the party pledging to implement them if elected to government.

Among the measures announced were lower fees for residents in Government elderly homes, with residents expected to save an average of €3,600 per year.

The PN also proposed yearly grants for elderly people living in their own homes. Those aged over 80 would receive €1,050 annually, those aged between 75 and 79 would receive €850, while those aged between 70 and 74 would receive €500 yearly.

Another proposal includes a €2,000 yearly grant for women who stayed at home to raise a family.

Grandparents who take care of grandchildren under the age of three while the parents work would also receive a direct pension supplement of up to €2,000 per child every year.

The package also includes free home visits by the elderly person’s family doctor of choice, fully funded by the government, along with free medicine delivery directly to elderly people’s homes.

The proposals aim to strengthen financial security for pensioners, help elderly people remain independent for longer, and reduce pressure on elderly care homes.
