Alex Borg has announced a series of proposals aimed at improving support for Gozitan students and young people, including an increase in financial assistance for those studying in Malta.

Under the plan, the monthly grant for Gozitan students living and studying in Malta would rise to €400. The measure is intended to help cover rising rental costs and the increased cost of living, particularly for students who have to live independently away from Gozo.

The proposals also include the creation of a €2 million fund dedicated to upgrading or building modern youth centres. These centres would be designed to provide safe, contemporary spaces for young people, reflecting current needs and lifestyles.

In addition, Borg outlined plans to transform the University of Malta’s Gozo Campus. The vision includes expanding the range of courses offered, particularly in STEM fields, and strengthening collaboration with the private sector. The campus would also be developed to attract conferences, research activity, academic events, and “living labs” to Gozo.

The proposal further aims to ensure continuity of lectures during adverse weather conditions, helping students avoid disruption to their studies.

Borg said the measures form part of a wider effort to strengthen opportunities for young Gozitans, making education and youth development in Gozo more accessible, modern, and resilient.
