The Nationalist Party has pledged reforms to Malta’s cancer care system, including a commitment to provide all prescribed cancer medicines free of charge, as part of a broader health overhaul.

In proposals announced yesterday during the Party’s first mass rally, leader Alex Borg said patients would no longer need to “plead” for access to treatment, arguing that timely and equitable care should be guaranteed as a right.

The plan forms part of a wider strategy built on two key pillars: a network of newly built hospitals and a national centre dedicated to promoting healthier lifestyles.

The party said these would operate in tandem, combining high-quality acute care with preventative health measures.

He added that the expansion would reduce strain on Mater Dei Hospital and improve access by bringing services closer to communities, with facilities planned for every region.

Describing the proposals as a “fresh start” for the sector, the party said reform was urgently needed.
