PN Proposes Four Day Work Week Pilot Project For Public Sector Workers
Local

The Nationalist Party has proposed launching a four-day work week pilot project within selected areas of Malta’s public sector as part of its electoral manifesto ahead of the general election set for 30th May.

According to the proposal, the pilot scheme would test different models of a four-day working week in consultation with unions, employers and the MCESD.

The project would study whether workers remain productive while working fewer days, while also measuring the impact on service quality, employee wellbeing and family life.

The PN says the aim is to explore more family-friendly working arrangements without affecting productivity or essential services.

The manifesto also includes other proposals focused on flexible working.

Among them is a stronger push for hybrid working within the public sector, allowing employees to work partly from home where possible. The party says government should “lead by example” in creating more modern working conditions.

Another proposal would give parents of children under 12, as well as carers looking after elderly relatives or people with disabilities, a guaranteed minimum amount of remote or hybrid working hours each month when their job allows it.

The PN is also proposing stronger flexitime arrangements, giving parents more control over when they start and finish work.

According to the manifesto, if the four-day work week pilot produces positive results, similar measures could gradually expand into other sectors.
