During a visit to Maritime MT as part of Workers’ Day activities, the Leader of the Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg said that Malta still has significant untapped potential in the maritime sector, which could contribute more strongly to the economy and offer high quality employment opportunities for Maltese workers.

He said a Nationalist Government would aim to elevate the sector by creating a dedicated authority focused solely on maritime affairs. This, he explained, would help strengthen governance and improve strategic direction within the industry.

Borg also emphasised the importance of education and training, proposing stronger support for institutions such as Maritime MT.

He said students should be entitled to stipends on the same basis as those in other post-secondary institutions, ensuring fair access to training and encouraging more young people to pursue maritime careers.

He added that maritime related subjects should be introduced at secondary school level to spark interest from an early age and help build a skilled workforce for the future.

He also noted that the party plans to launch a major maritime project in the coming days, stressing the need for trained professionals to support future investment in the sector.

Maritime MT is a private institution that provides training for seafarers and others seeking careers in maritime industries.

Chief Executive Officer Pauline Micallef welcomed the proposals, saying greater emphasis is needed to inspire students early and highlighting the opportunities available if sufficient investment is made.

The visit was also attended by Ivan Castillo and Justin Schembri.
