PN PROMISES BRAND NEW GOZO CHANNEL FLEET AND MAJOR IMĠARR PORT EXTENSION

Alex Borg has revealed that a future Nationalist Government would introduce a fully renewed Gozo Channel fleet and carry out a major expansion of Mġarr Harbour as part of a wider plan to improve connectivity between Malta and Gozo.
The proposals include a new passenger vessel and a cargo vessel, with the passenger ship expected to be operational by 2029. The fleet would be fully accessible for persons with disabilities and feature calming rooms, a design that would also be introduced on existing vessels. The MV Nikolaos would cease operations under the plan.
The Nationalist Party also pledged an expansion of Mġarr Harbour, which it said has become too small for current demand. The project would include adequate parking facilities following consultation with stakeholders, including NGOs, businesses, fishermen, and tourism operators. Further investment would later shift focus to Ċirkewwa Harbour, including upgrades to the South Quay and expanded parking, with a total investment of around €7 million.
Connectivity improvements also feature prominently, with plans to reintroduce cargo services between Gozo, the Grand Harbour, and the Freeport within the first year of government. The MV Gaudos would also be upgraded with hoistable decks.
In addition, the Fast Ferry service would be significantly enhanced, with more frequent trips, half-hourly peak services, extended late-night operations on weekends, and shuttle links during major events in Valletta.
