PN Leader Alex Borg Visits Corradino Correctional Facility

‘The Corradino Correctional Facility plays a vital role in Malta, particularly in ensuring that individuals are rehabilitated with dignity and respect. Alongside this, important preparatory work is carried out within the facility to support residents as they work towards reintegration into society. It is therefore essential that efforts continue to strengthen and support the work undertaken within this institution.’
This message was delivered by the Leader of the Opposition and of the Partit Nazzjonalista, Alex Borg, during a visit to the Corradino Correctional Facility. During his visit, he observed the work carried out at close quarters and met officials and professionals involved in the correctional sector, including medical staff and members of the Correctional Services Agency.
He was welcomed by the Director of the facility, Chris Siegersma, and the Chief Operations Officer, Colonel Etienne Scicluna. Throughout the visit, Dr Borg was briefed on ongoing work and the daily challenges faced by both residents and officers. He also highlighted the importance of maintaining a correctional system that operates with seriousness, fairness and a humane approach, while fostering an environment in which individuals can reform and avoid reoffending.
The PN Leader toured several areas of the facility, including the clinic, the chapel and the Learning Hub. He also visited selected divisions and the prison bakery before holding a private meeting with the facility’s management.
Accompanied by Shadow Minister for Home Affairs and Security Darren Carabott and Nationalist MP Ivan Bartolo, Dr Borg emphasised the need to ensure justice for victims, noting that residents must recognise the consequences of their actions.
At the same time, he stressed that such institutions must provide individuals with the support and tools necessary to rebuild their lives and avoid creating further victims. This balanced approach remains central to building a safer, just and cohesive society for all.
