PN Is Ignoring Progress in Malta's Waste Management Sector, PL Says

The Labour Party has responded to the Nationalist Party’s claim that they presented a misleading picture of the country’s waste statistics, saying the the Opposition was ignoring the contributions and achievements of the Maltese public.
In their statement, Labour said the PN was failing to recognise the efforts of Maltese and Gozitan families and businesses who contribute to improvements in recycling by separating their waste everyday.
The party highlighted Eurostat figures showing Malta generated 1,092kg of waste per person in 2024, the lowest figure in the EU, while claiming the country's plastic recycling rate had also improved significantly.
The response follows a PN statement saying Malta's 2024 waste statistics did not account for Malta’s substantial construction and mineral waste. They say that overall waste generation increased by 17.6% in 2024, reaching 3.5 million tonnes.
PL acknowledged that challenges remain but accused the Opposition of politicising the issue, linking its criticism to controversy surrounding the proposed Waste-to-Energy project.
