PN Claims That Driving Licence Surrender Scheme Doesn't Offer Tangible Solution To Traffic Problem

Chris Bonnet, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works stated that he would like to decrease 200 licenses annually across 5 years, claimed the Shadow Minister Toni Bezzina in a statement.
Bezzina, Shadow Minister for Transport, Agriculture and Fisheries, followed this by stating that 200 licenses are gained in Malta every single week, referring to Parliamentary Question 32119 where Bonnet reported that 9,000 new licenses were given in Malta in 2024.
Additionally, Bonnet stated that 60% of these were handed to foreigners.
Bezzina claimed that Bonnet’s system will result in 1,000 cars owned by Maltese residents to be decreased from our roads, while 45,000 new cars are added, many of which will belong to foreigners.
As reported by PN, only 21,000 Maltese people obtained their license in the last 5 years, along with 19,000 foreigners.
Toni Bezzina stated that the cause for this situation is the government’s economic plan centred around population growth, and Bonnet's system will not reduce traffic in Maltese roads.
