PN ANNOUNCES REMOVAL OF METER RENT FOR RESIDENTIAL HOMES IN ENERGY PROPOSAL
Local

A key measure outlined in the Nationalist Party’s energy proposal is the removal of the annual electricity meter rent for residential homes, a policy that would directly reduce household utility costs across Malta and Gozo.

According to the plan, the charge currently applied to residential electricity accounts would be fully abolished for households. The measure forms part of a wider package aimed at lowering energy bills and easing cost of living pressures for families.

The proposal states that the removal of meter rent would apply to around 228,000 households. It is intended to provide immediate and visible savings on electricity bills, ensuring that consumers benefit directly without requiring behavioural changes or application-based schemes.

PN leader Alex Borg and candidates Jonathan Muscat and described the measure as part of a broader effort to simplify energy billing and increase transparency. They argued that fixed charges such as meter rent contribute to higher household costs regardless of consumption, and that their removal would make bills more straightforward and easier to understand.

The policy would be introduced alongside other reforms in the energy sector if the Nationalist Party is elected to government. It is expected to be financed as part of a wider restructuring of energy subsidies and investments in renewable generation capacity.

The proposal has been presented as one of the most direct forms of relief for households within the party’s energy package, focusing specifically on reducing fixed costs on residential electricity bills.
