Serious allegations raised by former Labour MEP Marlene Mizzi about political interference at Malita Investments plc have prompted strong reactions from Malta’s main political parties, each demanding clarity, accountability and formal investigations into the conduct of the Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation, Roderick Galdes.

Mizzi, who served as Chairperson of Malita Investments until her removal in May 2024, stated that she was dismissed only weeks after confronting Minister Galdes over what she described as unacceptable interference and his close relationships with company contractors. Her claims were made public in a Facebook post, in which she recounted a meeting in the minister’s office during which she challenged what she viewed as undue influence. Mizzi argued that Malita had been financially sound and operating under robust governance standards during her tenure.

Her comments come at a time when Malita Investments is facing growing financial pressures. Although the company recorded over €5 million in profits in the first half of 2025, it has not paid most contractors since April and made only one payment between April and November. The company also halted a €44 million social housing project in Luqa and has faced accusations of fraudulent behaviour from Alexis Vella Falzon, CEO of Vella Falzon Group, which is owed approximately €1.6 million.

The issue has widened into a politically charged debate about the influence of the construction and development industry on Malta’s policymaking. Critics argue that both major political parties rely heavily on developers for funding, which risks undermining transparency and impartiality in planning decisions and environmental policy.

In response to Mizzi’s allegations, ADPD The Green Party issued a forceful statement calling for the immediate resignation of Minister Galdes. The party argued that the repeated accusations against him indicate deep-rooted governance failures within his ministry. ADPD Chairperson Sandra Gauci said the public deserves full transparency and insisted that no government ministry should operate without accountability. She also called for an independent investigation into all allegations surrounding Malita Investments.

The Nationalist Party has also taken formal action. Its representatives on the Public Accounts Committee will request the National Audit Office to launch an inquiry into Malita’s operations. The PN emphasised that the government must take every necessary step to uncover the truth behind the decisions taken within the social housing sector, particularly where political influence may have played a role.

Partit Momentum has similarly demanded scrutiny. In an email to Standards Commissioner Joseph Azzopardi, sent by Arnold Cassola, the party requested a formal investigation into Minister Galdes, echoing concerns raised in media reports and by Mizzi herself. Momentum stated that the seriousness of the allegations warrants immediate institutional action.

Minister Galdes has denied any wrongdoing in a public Facebook post and has insisted that Malita remains capable of managing its financial challenges. However, his critics note that he has avoided answering parliamentary questions on the matter and has remained silent when contractors sought updates on outstanding payments.
