PN Accuses Government Of Blocking Debate On Daphne Caruana Galizia Inquiry Recommendations

The Partit Nazzjonalista has accused Robert Abela’s Government of continuing to obstruct the pursuit of truth and justice by refusing to debate an Opposition Motion calling for the full implementation of the recommendations of the Public Inquiry into the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia by the end of October.

During a press conference, PN Shadow Ministers Mark Anthony Sammut and Michael Piccinino said the Opposition had gone before Parliament believing that, five years after the publication of the Inquiry’s findings, the Government would finally be willing to act.

They said the PN had presented a clear proposal with a specific deadline, but claimed that Robert Abela and his Government were unwilling even to discuss it.

The PN argued that the Government’s decision demonstrated that, despite repeated statements by the Prime Minister, it was still not prepared to implement reforms linked to the Inquiry’s recommendations.

The party said Robert Abela could not continue claiming that he wanted justice while refusing to debate measures aimed at ensuring those recommendations were carried out. It added that every further delay represented a political decision for which the Prime Minister must take responsibility.

The PN also criticised Abela’s attempts to distance himself from those who had attacked Daphne Caruana Galizia, arguing that people close to the Labour establishment, including Neville Gafà and Jason Micallef, continued to make comments against the murdered journalist and her family.

The party said that those committed to justice should not avoid debate or delay reforms, adding that it would continue pushing for independent institutions, stronger protection for journalists and political accountability.

It concluded that Robert Abela faced a choice between taking action to address the concerns raised by the Public Inquiry or continuing to defend the current situation.
