On Sunday afternoon, Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, visited the Marsa horse racing track to review the final works ahead of its reopening for the upcoming horse racing championship.

The project forms part of the Government’s work programme to strengthen Malta’s sports infrastructure.

Prime Minister Abela highlighted the importance of horse racing as a sport in Malta and noted that the Government had delivered on its commitment to regenerate the Marsa track.

He added that the track now features international-standard facilities for racing and training. He also noted that Malta’s economic strength allows investment in multiple areas, including health, education, social services, environmental projects and high-quality sports infrastructure.

During the visit, the Prime Minister was briefed on the project’s objectives, including the creation of a high-quality track capable of hosting more events and offering reassurance to athletes.

The project prioritised horse welfare. Designed by Maltese architect Edwin Mintoff under the guidance of Swedish architect Lars Sandstrom, the track now allows faster races and a more exciting experience.

The works included the installation of a new lighting system for the indoor track, a new railing, and the placement of layers of stone and sand of different sizes and types on the track surface. Surrounding areas were also regenerated with the planting of new trees.
