Speaking on Sunday morning, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that previous governments had long wished to return major public areas back to the people, but financial limitations had prevented such projects from moving forward. Today, he said, the country is finally in a position to make them happen.

Referring to Manoel Island, Abela reaffirmed that the development of a national park will take place, stressing that the government’s commitment has already been made.

The Prime Minister announced that an open public consultation will soon launch for both Manoel Island and the White Rocks project. He stated that together, these two regenerated spaces will form the biggest project ever given back to the people, covering an area roughly the size of Valletta.

This consultation will include everyone, from NGOs, local councils and all relevant stakeholders to the main stakeholder: the people themselves. Abela also emphasised that children will be part of the process, ensuring the future generation has a voice in shaping Malta’s public spaces.

He stressed the importance of preserving historic and archaeological structures within these sites, promising that the projects will respect and safeguard Malta’s heritage while creating the best possible open spaces for the public.
