Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Minister Clifton Grima, visited the National Sport School (NSS) in Pembroke, where he met students specialising in various sporting disciplines.

The NSS combines academic education with high-level sports training, nurturing young Maltese athletes to reach professional standards. The school currently hosts 241 students and offers training in 21 sports.

During the visit, Abela met several students who have excelled abroad, including gymnast Sophie St John.

He also praised the school’s role in supporting athletes such as swimmer Sasha Gatt, who competed in the Olympics, and footballer Haley Bugeja, who plays in Italy’s Serie A, who according to him, are examples of Malta’s growing ability to produce athletes of international calibre.

The Prime Minister discussed the government’s ongoing investment in education and sports, noting that over €13 million will be allocated through the EDU Infrastructure Programme to modernise schools and create inclusive learning spaces.

He also mentioned the expansion of the free gym scheme to include youths aged 16 to 21, and the distribution of 20,000 digital devices to ensure equal access to technology.

Prime Minister Abela reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting physical activity and holistic education through new facilities like the Marsa Sports Complex and the National Tennis Centre in Pembroke.
