Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by Clint Camilleri, Minister for Gozo and Planning, and Jo Etienne Abela, Minister for Health and Active Ageing, visited the Gozo General Hospital, where a major investment programme is currently underway to modernise healthcare services on the island.

During the visit, the Prime Minister reviewed several key projects completed over the past two years, including the installation of a new MRI system that has already performed over 11,000 scans.

This upgraded service has significantly reduced waiting times at a national level, as Maltese patients can now opt to receive their scans in Gozo. This year also saw the addition of a new CT scanner, a 3D mammography machine, new Bi-PAP and CPAP machines, various advanced equipment, and a temporary hyperbaric chamber pending the completion of a permanent one.

Several major projects are still in progress, including the expansion of the Cardio-Respiratory Department, the enlargement of the Outpatients Department with nine new clinics, and a full upgrade of the hospital laboratory.

Another crucial initiative is the construction of a new helipad to improve emergency transfers to Mater Dei, along with a new drone landing area to ensure timely delivery of chemotherapy and other sensitive medicines.

The Prime Minister thanked the hospital’s workforce and emphasised that these investments aim to provide Gozo residents with top-quality healthcare close to home. He also noted the recent establishment of a dedicated miscarriage ward, ensuring privacy and dignity for grieving parents.

“What we’re seeing here today is the best example of a government that keeps its word,” stated Robert abela, “Gozo is receiving the largest investment in healthcare that has ever taken place, and its happening with respect towards the dignity of patients and professionals who work here.”
