PM Robert Abela Says: ‘I Want to Serve the Full Term’ When Asked About an Early Election

In an exclusive interview with Times of Malta, Prime Minister Robert Abela addressed the persistent speculation about an early general election.
Herman Grech, from Times of Malta, opened the conversation: “I get calls from people every day saying the election will be in March whether the 10th or the 17th, they all say it’s March.” He then asked the Prime Minister directly, “Are you calling an early election, yes or no?”
Responding to the question, Prime Minister Abela stated, “Every journalist asks me this all the time. Since I have been Prime Minister, we have a five-year term, and we will call the election when it is in the national interest.”
PM Robert Abela added, “If you ask me today, I believe there is no national interest in calling an early election.”
Abela noted, “Christmas is coming, and people should enjoy it with their families while we focus on running the country.”
When pressed further about the possibility of a March election, Herman asked, “Will you definitely rule it out?”
Prime Minister Abela replied, “I don’t see a reason for an early election. We’ll have to see what the circumstances are in 10 or 12 months.”
He concluded, “My plan is to complete the full term. Circumstances could theoretically lead to an election happening a month earlier, but I have never even thought about the date yet.”
