PM Robert Abela Promises Full State Protection To Paola Mayor Following Bank Account Seizure

Prime Minister Confirms Government Will Immediately Support Jason Silvio In Legal Proceedings
Prime Minister Robert Abela has pledged full state protection to Paola Mayor Jason Silvio after his personal bank accounts were frozen following legal action by a property developer.
In a social media post, Abela confirmed that he had personally spoken to Silvio, reassuring him that the government would immediately provide legal protection in both the seizure proceedings and the damages lawsuit filed against him.
The Prime Minister explained that a legal reform introduced just months ago was specifically designed to protect public officials facing legal action over decisions taken while carrying out their duties.
According to Abela, the reform now gives the government the legal tools necessary to intervene and protect Silvio.
He stressed that the government would provide immediate assistance in both the garnishee proceedings affecting the mayor's personal accounts and the civil case for damages brought against him.
The development follows Silvio's announcement that his personal bank accounts had been frozen after the Paola Local Council appealed a Planning Authority decision concerning a proposed development within the town's Urban Conservation Area (UCA).
The situation prompted councillors to walk out of Wednesday's council meeting in solidarity with the mayor, raising concerns about the potential consequences faced by public officials challenging planning decisions.
Abela concluded his message by reaffirming his commitment to defending those working in the public interest, stating that he would continue to act as a strong shield for anyone carrying out their duties on behalf of the people.
