PM Robert Abela Announces Free HIV Medication, Epipens, And Efforts To Reduce Hospital Waiting Times

In a statement released today, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that from the end of this month, the HIV prevention medications PrEP and PEP will be provided free of charge, fulfilling an electoral pledge made by the Labour Party.
Speaking during an interview, Abela said the measure forms part of continued investment in the healthcare sector and aims to strengthen prevention efforts against the spread of HIV.
He also announced that the government will cover the cost of epipens for people suffering from severe allergies.
Around 1,600 individuals currently rely on epipens, which are costly, and will now be entitled to receive two devices per year free of charge, each lasting approximately six months.
The Prime Minister said efforts are also underway to reduce waiting times across health services, highlighting improvements through the 1400 helpline, intermediate care services at Censu Moran and San Vincent de Paul, and major capital projects at Mater Dei Hospital.
These include the extension of the Emergency Department and the construction of a new Psychiatry Unit, with tenders expected to close this year so work can begin immediately.
Turning to national heritage, Abela confirmed that discussions have started to return Fort Salvatur to public ownership, alongside other sites such as Manoel Island, White Rocks, Fort Campbell and Fort Tigné.
He said these projects aim to strike a balance between development and open spaces that enhance quality of life.
Abela also referred to recent and ongoing investments in sports infrastructure, including the new Marsa Sports Complex, which will help Malta host the Youth Commonwealth Games.
He said the country’s strong economic position is enabling these investments, contrasting Labour’s approach with what he described as the Nationalist Party’s austerity-driven policies.
On foreign policy, Abela defended Malta’s independent stance on Ukraine-related decisions, insisting that his government’s experience and competence are crucial in navigating today’s geopolitical challenges while safeguarding economic stability for Maltese and Gozitans.
