PM Inaugurates New Vessel In Malta Maritime Pilot’s Co-Operative Fleet

During the inauguration of the newest vessel in the Maritime Pilots’ Cooperative fleet, Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted that the maritime pilot boat reflects the industry’s confidence in the skills of Maltese workers and in the competence of all those who support the country’s strong maritime sector.
He noted that maritime pilots have guided ships in Maltese ports for generations, ensuring safety and efficiency through a high level of professionalism.
Every vessel above 500 tonnes entering or leaving Malta requires the expertise of a maritime pilot, and last year alone around 8,000 pilotage operations were completed.
Abela praised the pilots’ adherence to international standards, pointing out that they are capable of managing the largest container ships and cruise liners.
Their work underpins both trade and tourism, making them essential to Malta’s economic competitiveness. He added that ongoing investment, including advances in clean energy, will further strengthen the sector’s sustainability and growth.
The Prime Minister referred to the shore to ship project operating in the Grand Harbour, which is expected to reduce emissions significantly by 2030, directly benefiting thousands of residents.
He also reiterated the importance of the maritime sector within Malta Vision 2050. Minister Chris Bonett welcomed the new vessel as a crucial investment in safety and reliability.
