PM Announces New Student Behaviour Framework For Schools

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that the Government will soon present a new behavioural framework for students, which will introduce updated protocols in schools covering behaviour, search procedures and responses during emergency situations.

The announcement was made during a room4ideas discussion at the MCAST campus library in Paola, focused on education and opportunities for children and young people.

Abela said the framework will first be discussed with Heads of School before being published and implemented as part of a measure included in the Labour Party’s electoral manifesto.

The discussion, moderated by Pauline Agius, brought together MCAST Principal Stephen Vella, Rabat Primary School Head Dorita Maniscalco, veterinary student Michela Aquilina and parent Analise Borg.

Abela highlighted continued investment in education, including improvements to school environments. He referred to the completion of primary schools in Valletta and Kerċem, Gozo, as well as ongoing work on schools in Naxxar and Qormi.

The Prime Minister said education must continue adapting to the needs of Malta’s labour market, including emerging sectors such as aviation. He also referred to plans to review the national curriculum, a reform on adolescent social media use, and efforts to strengthen vocational education.

Abela said Malta has made progress in reducing early school leaving, moving below the European average and reaching the European Commission’s 2030 target ahead of schedule. He said further reductions remain a priority.

During the discussion, participants also highlighted investment in educators, support measures for children, free swimming lessons, increased assistance funds for students lacking basic necessities, and the introduction of veterinary studies in Malta.
