Plant Health 4 Life: Reinforcing Simple Actions That Protect Plants

The Plant Health 4 Life campaign has returned for its fourth and final year, bringing together the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Commission and 33 participating countries, including Malta.

Locally, the initiative is supported by the Food Safety and Security Authority within the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Supply.

Since its launch, the campaign has highlighted the vital role plants play in everyday life, from the food people eat to the environment they depend on.

This year's campaign aims to build on previous efforts by encouraging citizens to stay informed and take simple steps to help protect plant health.

Healthy plants produce around 80% of the food consumed worldwide, support livestock farming and contribute to cleaner air. They are also essential for maintaining agricultural productivity, helping to ensure stable food supplies and prices.

However, climate change, global trade and increased travel have made it easier for harmful pests and diseases to spread across borders, threatening crops, forests and biodiversity.

The campaign encourages travellers to avoid bringing plants or seeds into the EU from outside the bloc unless permitted, while gardeners are urged to source plants responsibly and remain alert for signs of pests or disease.

Parents are also encouraged to help raise awareness among younger generations about the importance of protecting nature.

By promoting greater public awareness and encouraging responsible behaviour, Plant Health 4 Life aims to leave a lasting legacy, ensuring that protecting plant health remains a shared responsibility across Europe long after the campaign comes to an end.
