PL Wants Traffic Lights To Turn Green Faster For Buses & Bring Back Old-Style Routes

The Labour Party has proposed major reforms to Malta’s public transport system, including more direct bus routes across Malta and Gozo and smart traffic lights designed to prioritise buses in traffic.
The proposals form part of Labour’s electoral manifesto ahead of the next general election on 30 May.
Labour noted that public transport use increased significantly after buses became free in 2022, particularly in daily ridership. The party said the current concession will end in 2029, with work already under way on a new high-quality bus network.
A key proposal is the introduction of routes that would not necessarily pass through Valletta, similar to the former tal-linja system.
This would create more direct links between towns and villages, reducing journey times and avoiding unnecessary transfers.
The new network would be developed following public consultation and discussions with local councils.
Smaller buses would also be introduced for shorter and more frequent village routes, improving links between nearby localities.
The manifesto highlights circular routes in Marsaskala and Buġibba, connecting residents to village centres and integrating land and sea transport services.
The system would also be coordinated with sea transport services and the proposed Rapid Transit System.
Labour is additionally proposing RFID technology at traffic lights to improve bus flow through junctions.
The system would detect approaching buses and adjust signals automatically, extending green lights or shortening red lights to reduce delays.
The party said these measures aim to reduce travel times, minimise stops, improve reliability and encourage greater use of public transport over private cars.
Labour also confirmed that all buses in Gozo will begin operating electrically, with plans to extend electrification across Malta’s fleet, helping reduce emissions and improve air quality across the islands.
