PL’s Chris Agius & PN’s David Agius Will Not Contest 2026 Election

Two long-serving MPs, Chris Agius and David Agius, have announced they will not be contesting the next general election, bringing decades of political service to a close.
Labour MP Chris Agius, widely known as il-Wefi, will retire after a 30-year political career. First elected in 1996, he was returned to parliament in seven consecutive elections.
He served as a junior minister for eight years, including roles in research, innovation and sport, and later planning and lands.
He also represented Malta in international institutions such as the World Anti-Doping Agency. In 2023, he was appointed chair of Yachting Malta.
Now aged 64, Agius said he had long planned to retire at this stage, adding that he intends to remain involved in the party in a less prominent role.
Meanwhile, David Agius, a former Net TV anchor who later became a Nationalist MP, is ending a 25-year political career. He first entered public life on the Attard Local Council in 2001 and was elected to parliament two years later.
During his time in office, he served as government whip under Lawrence Gonzi and later as Opposition whip after 2013. He also held the role of deputy leader for parliamentary affairs within the PN and contested the 2024 European Parliament election.
