Ahead of the election on the 30th of May 2026, the Labour Party has begun to unveil its proposals forming part of this year’s electoral campaign.

The Labour Party has proposed a significant increase in the birth bonus as part of its electoral programme, aimed at providing stronger financial support to families.

Currently, parents receive €1,000 for a first child, €1,500 for a second, and €2,000 for a third or subsequent child.

Under the new proposal, this would be replaced by a flat payment of €5,000 for every child, regardless of birth order.

The scheme would also introduce earlier financial assistance, with an initial €3,000 payment issued during the seventh month of pregnancy. The remaining balance would then be paid following the child’s birth.

The party said the measure is designed to better support families as they prepare for the arrival of a child, easing financial pressures during pregnancy and immediately after birth.
