PL Proposes Maternity Leave Increase By 8 Weeks To 26 Total

As the 2026 general election campaign kicks off, the Labour Party proposed a Quality of Life & Well-being proposal, aiming to improve maternity and paternity leave.
The PL is proposing increasing maternity leave by eight weeks, bringing it up to 26 weeks in total. Meanwhile, a doubling of paternity leave is being proposed, increasing from two weeks to one month.
Six months of parental leave will be introduced, paid by the Government, the PL has proposed. This leave will be voluntary and may be shared between both parents as they choose.
‘For parental leave, parents earning up to seventy thousand euro will continue to receive full pay. We have understood that time is one of the most important needs, and we are responding to this. This will not place a burden on businesses, as Government finances can sustain this investment in families and children.’
‘In addition, during the first year after birth and up to the child’s second birthday, parents will be entitled to an additional twenty-eight (28) days of leave between them, also fully paid by the Government, to help them better adjust their lives and spend more time with their children.’
‘If parents choose to return to work immediately and do not take the six months of parental leave, the twenty-eight (28) additional days may be used straight away.’
