Labour has announced plans to introduce a national prostate cancer screening programme for men turning 55, as part of a wider package of healthcare reforms aimed at improving early detection and prevention.

The proposals also include the introduction of lung cancer screening for high-risk individuals and screening for people with a family history of pancreatic cancer. In addition, the eligibility age for breast cancer screening and bowel cancer blood tests would be lowered to 45.

Labour said it also aims to eradicate cervical cancer in Malta through expanded prevention measures. These include the distribution of self-screening swab tests, free HPV vaccines for all women under 35, and wider access to the vaccine for men.

The party further pledged investment in modern equipment to improve retinal screening for diabetic patients. Sir Paul Boffa Hospital would meanwhile be transformed into a National Screening Centre, also housing the Floriana health centre and a full-day vaccination hub.
