PL Propose Widows Will Receive Deceased Partner's Full Pension As Of 2027

The Labour Party has announced a series of pension reform proposals aimed at improving fairness and support for couples and widows, as part of its programme ahead of the general election.
One key measure would allow couples to transfer up to five years of surplus national insurance contributions between them, enabling a partner with insufficient contributions to qualify for the minimum pension.
Those who have already paid to cover contribution gaps would still be able to transfer surplus credits to enhance their pension.
The party also confirmed that reforms to widows’ pensions will be completed by 2027. From next year, widows will begin receiving the full pension of their deceased spouse.
Additionally, widows who forfeited their own pension upon taking a widow’s pension would receive a 20% increase as compensation.
The proposals are intended to strengthen pension adequacy and address long-standing inequalities within the system.
