Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced an extensive series of environmental and urban regeneration projects aimed at significantly increasing green open spaces across Malta and Gozo.

The initiatives, unveiled as part of the government’s environmental proposals, include the expansion of existing parks, the creation of new recreational areas, and the transformation of previously industrial sites into public open spaces.

Among the projects announced is the substantial extension of several existing parks, including Wied Inċita, Bengħajsa Park, and Salina Park. The government said these upgrades are intended to improve accessibility to recreational and natural areas for surrounding communities.

A major new green project is also planned in the Fgura area, where a new 40,000-square-metre green space will be developed. The project will connect the locality with the San Klement Park, creating a larger interconnected recreational zone for residents in the south of Malta. The Prime Minister also confirmed that works on the final phase of the national park at Ta' Qali National Park will proceed, continuing one of the country’s largest open-space regeneration initiatives.

Abela announced that land originally earmarked for a recycling plant will instead be transformed into an open public space measuring nearly 23,800 square metres. The Prime Minister stressed that the administration had fulfilled its commitment to close the proposed facility and convert the site into a recreational area for the public.

Additional projects include the creation of the San Patrizju Park in Pembroke, while the surrounding area near Fortizza delle Grazie will also be redeveloped into an open green space. The government further revealed that extensive works are underway to connect the gardens of Floriana and Pietà through a wider green network initiative. Regeneration works have already begun at the Pinetum Garden, while permits have also been issued for further restoration and regeneration projects at Milorda Garden.

The package of projects forms part of the government’s broader strategy to improve environmental sustainability, urban quality of life, and public access to open spaces amid increasing development pressures across the islands.
