The Labour Party continues to hold a narrow advantage over the Nationalist Party, retaining a three-point lead, according to the first MaltaToday survey of 2026.

Labour enjoys the support of 48.9% of voters, compared to 45.7% for the PN, while third parties collectively account for 5.4%. Based on a projected turnout of 81.1%, this gap translates into a lead of 9,262 votes.

Compared to November 2025, Labour gains 0.2 points, while the PN loses 0.4 points, indicating that the balance between the two main parties has remained broadly unchanged since October.

Labour is losing a significantly larger share of its 2022 voters to abstention than the PN. While 13.9% of those who voted Labour in 2022 now say they will not vote, only 3.9% of former PN voters express the same intention.

Overall, 75.6% of Labour’s 2022 voters would still back the party today, compared to 86.7% of PN voters.

Although there is a modest net shift of voters from the PL to the PN, the primary driver of Labour’s reduced support since 2022 is abstention among its own voters rather than direct losses to the opposition.

Trust ratings show a more mixed picture for the governing party. Prime Minister Robert Abela is trusted by 41.3% of voters, down from 45.2% in November, while PN leader Alex Borg stands at 35.9%, up by 0.6 points. Abela’s decline corresponds to a rise in those who trust neither leader.

Regionally, Labour leads in four out of six regions, while the PN holds a strong lead in North Harbour and a marginal one in Gozo.
