Labour Party activist Nigel Vella has criticised Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg, claiming that his Budget reaction speech last night echoed a tactic previously used by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

Vella pointed out that Muscat, as Opposition Leader in 2011, responded to a challenge from then Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi by presenting 51 proposals to address national issues.

Borg, Vella said, attempted to mimic this approach by issuing 50 proposals during his speech.

Vella described Borg as a “copy-paste leader”, arguing that most of the proposals were already in the public domain or had been suggested by previous Nationalist leaders, including Adrian Delia and Bernard Grech.

He acknowledged that the only proposal Borg appeared to originate himself was a national trust fund for children, but claimed this idea was adapted from similar schemes in Singapore and South Korea.

In a social media post, Vella criticised Borg for failing to provide details or costings for the proposals, suggesting that the speech lacked originality and relied heavily on existing government plans.

Among his proposals, Borg proposed; a €5,000 savings fund for every baby born in Malta; new mental health hospital and the regeneration of three; mass transport system and AI traffic coordination; tax exemptions and; four day work week pilot and teleworking incentives.
