Phillipines Community In Malta Celebrate Sinulog Festival

The Philippines community in Malta took to the streets to celebrate the Sinulog Festival, a religious tradition originating in Cebu, Philippines.

The festival is held every January in honour Santo Niño (Holy Child Jesus). It is one of the largest cultural celebrations in the Philippines, attracting thousands of attendees for street parties.

The word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano adverb ‘sulog’, roughly meaning water current, which is an analogy of the forward-backward dance movements performed to the drum sounds.

This is a ritual prayer dance honouring Child Jesus, but has origins going back to before Christianity was introduced in the region.
