Petition calling for social media verified IDs gets over 500,000 signatures

A petition set up calling for social media platforms to require verified ID has been signed by well over 500,000 people. A woman named Katie Price set up the petition earlier this year after her teenage son Harvey received cruel online abuse for having a number of disabilities. The petition blew up following the racial abuse directed at footballers Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jason Sancho after the Euro Final.

The petition calls for social media platforms to ‘make it a legal requirement when opening a new social media account, to provide a verified form of ID. Where the account belongs to a person under the age of 18 verify the account with the ID of a parent/guardian, to prevent anonymised harmful activity, providing traceability if an offence occurs.’ At the rate the petition is receiving signatures, the proposals are likely to be taken up for consideration.#MaltaDaily
