Peppi Azzopardi Sparks Debate Over Maltese Language In Popolin Appearance

Xarabank host Peppi Azzopardi’s recent statements on Popolin about the Maltese language caused a bit of an uproar locally after he questioned certain technical linguistic conventions as well as the importance of Maltese more generally.

In one instance, he questioned why people need to use ‘għ’ when they ignore conventions whilst chatting.

He said that we need the Maltese language to evolve and not keep it stuck by sticking to certain confusing conventions.

In another instance, he said that students need to learn English as a priority in schools, as this gives them the necessary advantages to work in a globalised world.

He added that this comes from a place of love for the Maltese language, especially poetry, but that future generations need to know the English language as a matter of surviving the workplace.
