Peppi Azzopardi Proposes Lyric Changes to “Bella” to Highlight Palestinian Children at Eurovision

Maltese presenter and media personality Peppi Azzopardi has suggested changing parts of the lyrics of the song “Bella,” originally performed by Aidan, in light of ongoing discussions surrounding the Eurovision Song Contest and calls for a boycott linked to the Israel–Palestine conflict.
In a social media post, Azzopardi said he does not agree with boycotting Eurovision. He stated that he believes countries should take part in international competitions when given the opportunity. However, he also proposed using Malta’s participation as a platform to deliver a humanitarian message.
Azzopardi described “Bella” as one of the most beautiful international songs ever associated with Eurovision, but suggested modifying part of the lyrics to dedicate the opening section to Palestinian children who have died during the conflict. He explained that he tried to keep as much of the original song as possible while adding references to the large number of child casualties and a message calling for justice.
The proposed version includes lines questioning why “20,000 children had to die” and focuses on themes of loss, empathy, justice and hope for peace. According to Azzopardi, the wording was intentionally kept non-political to avoid potential objections from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
He said he sent the proposal to PBS chairperson Anna Bonnet for consideration.
