Since 2022, the Government has concluded around 140 agreements for workers and invested close to two billion euro in pay increases alone, according to official figures highlighted during a recent signing ceremony.

At the event, described as marking the largest investment in Civil Protection workers to date, Prime Minister Robert Abela said he is proud to lead a country that continues to invest heavily in its workforce. He said the agreement improves working conditions and career progression for officers within the Civil Protection corps, which plays a key role in emergency response and public safety.

He reiterated that each sectoral agreement signed since 2022 represents another step in strengthening the position of workers and supporting their families. He noted that this latest agreement forms part of nearly 140 sectoral deals reached over the period, supported by what he described as a strong national economy enabling sustained investment in wages.

The agreement follows a previous one signed in 2021 and builds on earlier reforms. The Prime Minister pointed out that in 2015 the administration amended the law to allow members of disciplined forces to join unions, which paved the way for structured negotiations and collective agreements.

Under the new terms, Civil Protection officers will receive an allowance of €1,500 and a minimum annual increase of €2,200 per officer. The agreement also introduces improved working conditions and faster salary scale progression, aimed at enhancing both retention and career development within the corps.

The Prime Minister said the measures reflect a wider approach that turns social policy into practical improvements in quality of life. He added that Malta continues to provide stability and long term planning despite international challenges, particularly in essential services such as Civil Protection.

He also thanked officers for their dedication, noting their frequent role as first responders in emergencies both in Malta and abroad. He referred to continued investment in equipment, specialised vehicles, modern tools and upgraded stations.

Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri said the Government aims to match recognition of workers’ efforts with concrete improvements, ensuring better conditions and support for those protecting society.
