Partit Momentum Unveil €842 Million Transport Strategy To Tackle Traffic

Partit Momentum has unveiled an €842 million transport strategy aimed at tackling Malta’s worsening traffic and congestion crisis, offering what it describes as a practical and immediate alternative to the multi-billion euro infrastructure proposals put forward by the PN and PL.
The strategy was presented by Engineer Marco Cremona, whose vision forms the basis of the proposal.
With Malta now home to more than 447,000 licensed vehicles and annual congestion costs estimated at €1.13 billion, Momentum says its proposal can deliver major improvements at 72% less than the metro-style projects proposed by the larger parties.
At the centre of the plan is the Subsidised Shared Cab Initiative (SSCI), an AI-powered ride-sharing system that groups commuters travelling in the same direction into shared vehicles. Because it builds on existing cab fleets, apps and public familiarity with ride-hailing services, the system could be introduced almost immediately without requiring major construction.
“This plan stands in stark contrast to speculative, multi-billion euro infrastructure projects that may never materialise. Our plan makes use of the assets we already have and reclaims land, time and clean air for the public immediately,” said Mark Camilleri Gambin, the party’s secretary general.
The proposal also includes €234 million in annual fare subsidies to keep the service affordable, €150 million to expand Malta’s bus fleet with 300 additional buses, and €100 million to improve pavements to encourage safer walking access to transport hubs.
Momentum’s long-term target is to reduce Malta’s passenger car fleet to 200,000 by 2033. Once fully implemented, the party projects transit times could drop by as much as 60%, offering what it says is a realistic and efficient solution to one of Malta’s biggest national challenges.
