Partit Momentum Condemns Approval Of Major Development Near Ġgantija Temples

Momentum has strongly condemned the approval of a major development within the protected buffer zone of the Ġgantija Temples, describing the decision as “disgraceful” and dangerous for Malta’s heritage.
The Planning Authority granted final permission for a 22-apartment block and 20 basement garages close to the prehistoric site, despite longstanding objections from NGOs and concerns raised by UNESCO.
Critics argue that the required Heritage Impact Assessment was inadequate, noting contradictions in its findings on visual impact.
Momentum candidate Carmel Asciak labelled the decision “an outright scandal”, warning that institutions tasked with protecting heritage were instead enabling its erosion.
The party cautioned that the development could jeopardise Ġgantija’s World Heritage status, undermining international obligations. It has called for the decision to be reversed, full transparency on the approval process, and urgent reform of Malta’s planning system to prevent similar cases in future.
