A public consultation was launched last December about social media reform, with the government publishing a green paper that will lead the discussion around social media safety and practice.

Being led by Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms Rebecca Buttigieg, the public is being invited to take part in a public consultation on the reform, aiming at shaping future policies that affect how social media is accessed and used in our society.

The opinions of people are being sought after, with questions like the following being asked:

Should there be a mandatory age-verification system for access to social media?

What measures should be introduced to better protect children and adolescents from harmful or inappropriate content?

How can we ensure that social media platforms are used responsibly and safely?

What changes are needed to address the social impact of social media?

This comes after countries like Australia actually banned social media for under 16 year olds. It’s a topical issue which is being discussed the world-over as technology becomes an ever more important part of daily life.

The next public consultation is being held on the 28th of January 2026 at Villa Blanche, Triq Ħal-Far, iż-Żurrieq at 6:00pm.

This is your chance to share your thoughts!
You may also participate in the public consultation until 27 February 2026 by attending one of the open sessions or by submitting your feedback online at:
