The President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, has formally dissolved Parliament and set 30th May 2026 as the date for a general election, following advice from Prime Minister Robert Abela.

In a meeting held at San Anton Palace this evening, the President exercised her constitutional powers under Articles 76 and 77 of the Constitution of Malta to issue the proclamation.

The decision paves the way for the election of Members of the House of Representatives across all thirteen electoral districts.

The President also issued a formal Writ to the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Joseph Camilleri, instructing him and the Electoral Commission to organise the vote in accordance with the law.

Members of the Electoral Commission were formally tasked with overseeing the process. The Speaker of the House of Representatives was also notified of the dissolution and the upcoming election.
