Paola Mayor Jason Silvio has revealed that his personal bank accounts have been frozen following legal action by a developer after the local council appealed a Planning Authority decision concerning development within the town's Urban Conservation Area (UCA).

In a Facebook post, Silvio explained that the council had filed the appeal to protect the historic character of Paola.

He thanked fellow councillors for their support and expressed hope that justice would prevail.

The situation also led to the abrupt ending of Paola Local Council's meeting on Wednesday, 28th October.

After Silvio informed councillors about the freezing of his personal accounts and announced his departure, all councillors present unanimously walked out in solidarity.

The council stressed the importance of protecting the right of local authorities to appeal planning decisions without individual members facing personal repercussions.

In a statement, the Labour Party expressed its full solidarity with Silvio, describing the situation as unacceptable and condemning what it called bullying tactics against public officials carrying out their duties.

Prime Minister Robert Abela has also voiced his support, saying that Silvio will be given the “full protection of the State”, in light of the reforms protecting public officials introduced a few months ago.

The party also referred to legislative changes aimed at strengthening protection for public officials facing civil action connected to their responsibilities.

It reiterated its commitment to further planning reforms intended to strengthen the appeals process.

Labour Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba also expressed support for Silvio, describing it as shameful that someone challenging a development proposal on behalf of their community could face such consequences.

The incident has raised questions about the protection available to local councillors when challenging planning decisions and defending the interests of their communities.

The developer's position on the matter was not included in the statements provided.
