Over 9,600 Job Vacancies Recorded In Malta Between April & June 2026

Malta recorded 9,619 job vacancies during the second quarter of 2026, representing an increase of 0.1% compared to the same period in 2025, according to the latest Job Vacancy Survey.

The survey, which measures labour demand by looking at vacancies and occupied posts within enterprises employing one or more people, found that more than half of all vacancies were generated by the wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage, accommodation and food services activities, as well as professional, scientific, technical, administration and support service activities.

The highest year-on-year increase was recorded in the wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage, accommodation and food services sectors, which added 571 vacancies to reach a total of 3,236.

The construction sector also recorded an increase of 342 vacancies, while professional, scientific, technical, administration and support service activities experienced the largest decline, with 541 fewer vacancies compared to the second quarter of 2025.

Small enterprises employing between 1 and 49 people accounted for 60.4% of all vacancies, while companies employing 250 or more people generated 13.8% of vacant positions.

The private sector continued to dominate the job vacancy market, accounting for 96.0% of all vacant positions with 9,239 vacancies. The public sector accounted for the remaining 4.0%, with 380 vacancies.

The survey also showed that the total number of occupied posts during the second quarter of 2026 stood at 298,303. Of these, 80.0% were within the private sector, while 20.0% were in the public sector.

The overall job vacancy rate stood at 3.1%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to both the previous quarter and the second quarter of 2025. The highest vacancy rate was recorded in the construction sector at 6.2%.
